  • Edstart & The Daily Mile

    Wed 09 Jan 2019 Mrs J Dickerson

    Dear Parents/Carers,

This week we have started our new contract with Edstart, they support schools in offering full coverage of the primary P.E. Curriculum alongside a wide range of clubs both during the school day and afterschool. They will also be working with us to help increase the number of activities we can offer all children over lunchtime.

“Our aim is to improve the skills of children in every area of PE that we teach and develop life-long positive attitudes to sport, physical activity and healthy living. Our approach is designed to make sessions fun and accessible to each individual child.” Edstart

One of the activities that we are introducing at lunchtime is a worldwide scheme that aims to get children moving, The Daily Mile. Taking part in The Daily Mile is not compulsory and children can choose to take part in other activities instead such as dodgeball, lacrosse, dance fit, diamond cricket, hockey, fitness combat, basketball and circuit training.

The Daily Mile is a social physical activity, with children making their way around the playground however they want in the fresh air with friends. They can walk, jog, run, skip, jump or even floss! The idea is that they just keep moving for 15 consecutive minutes with the aim of covering a mile. More details for The Daily Mile can be found on www.thedailymile.co.uk.

    The Daily Mile Works!

    • It takes place in 15 minutes, with most children averaging a mile, or more, each day.

    • Children run outside in the fresh air – and the weather is a benefit, not a barrier.

    • There’s no set up, tidy up, or equipment required.

    • No staff training is needed and there is no extra workload for teachers.

    • Children stay in their uniforms so no kit or changing time is needed.

    • It’s social, non-competitive and fun.

    • The children return to class ready to learn.

    • It helps to improve fitness and achieve a healthy weight.

    • It encourages children to be aware of their health.

    • It’s fully inclusive; every child, whatever their circumstances, age or ability, succeeds at The Daily Mile.

This morning Adam Rowles and Sean Ogden from Edstart delivered a Kids4Kids assembly during which they showed children videos explaining why we need to exercise and be healthy and how much fun it can be.

“I’m really excited to take part and get fit.” Amy 2F

“I can’t wait to run it’s going to be so exciting.” Riley 2M

“I’m really excited to exercise and run.” Aisha 1H

“I’m really looking forward to running, I love running!” Alice 3W

“It’s so much fun to exercise.” Cerys 5RM

“I’m excited about the assembly as it shows us how to live a healthier future.” Ayshe Smith 5S
