SEND at St Luke's

Meet the SEN Team

SENCO: Anna Bolton

SEN/Parent Support/DSL: Jane Slater

SEN Support: Ivan Crompton

Welcome to our SEND website page. We have a number of staff members who work together to ensure every child at St Luke's has the opportunity to succeed.

We champion the equality and diversity of all our learners in school. Within this, we develop and oversee the implementation of the school’s SEND strategy and policy, carry out assessments of pupils with SEND to identify needs, and monitor the progress of children with additional needs.

We work closely with class teachers and other professionals, such Millwood Outreach and the Bury SEND Support Lead, to implement the best package of support for children with additional needs, so that all children experience an ambitious curriculum in an inclusive mainstream setting.

We follow The Graduated Approach to SEND which begins with inclusive high-quality teaching for all children. We believe that if the learning process and environment is right for children with SEND, it is right for every child.  Therefore, we have ensured that all our classroom environments are fully inclusive.

An inclusive classroom:

  • removes barriers to learning and participation
  • provides an education that is appropriate to pupils’ needs
  • promotes high standards and the fulfilment of potential for all pupils.

Pupils who continue to face challenges in their learning, despite receiving high-quality teaching, are likely to need additional strategies, or modified provision, to meet their needs.

The Graduated Approach will then move into the ‘assess, plan, do, review’ cycle which regularly allows myself and class teachers to monitor progress and ensure the children’s needs are being met in the classroom.

Regular communication with parents, through our SEND parent review meetings, includes providing positive feedback and discussions around the children’s progress and the provisions put into place to ensure the children are accessing their learning. Our approach allows the class teacher and SENCo to build an ongoing, holistic understanding of our pupils, their needs and how best we can support them in school.

We also understand that pupils’ development is not linear. We know that as pupils mature, the complexity of their needs will change. Some pupils might not display SEND needs at the start of their primary journey, but may develop SEND needs as they progress. Other children who are considered to have SEND in their early years may no longer have these needs later in life. At St Luke's, we understand the importance of liaising with parents and specialist professionals to ensure that we support the child, their family and their needs throughout their primary school journey, so that every child learns, achieves, and aspires to a bright future.

Bury SEND Local Offer

The Local Offer sets out information about the provision that is available across education, health and social care for children and young people who have Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND). Its purpose is to help families access information about the services that are available to them.

All Local Authorities must publish a Local Offer. The guidance on how to do this is set out in section 4 of the SEND Code of Practice. The process of developing the Local Offer will help local authorities and their health partners to improve provision.

Bury is committed to the Local Offer reflecting the advice, support and guidance that our families have requested. An annual cycle of co-production events helps to ensure that children and young people with SEND and their families have had a chance to have their say about its design and content.

A good Local Offer will reflect the priorities outlined by parents, carers, children and young people. Feedback given by stakeholders either through co-production events or via email should be promptly actioned by service providers to ensure that the information and services available are meeting local need.

Bury Parent support service SENDiass

Sendiass (Special Educational Needs Disability Information Advice Support Service) provides free impartial information, advice and support to disabled children and young people aged 0-25, and those with SEN, through their parents and carers. Young people aged 16+ can have support in their own right.
They can provide advice on the Special Educational Needs (SEN) systems, processes and code of practice, SEN provision in schools, the statutory assessment process and My Plan (Education, Health and Care Plans). They are also able to support with matters relating to annual reviews, transitions, transport, specialist provision/support services, local policies. If required, they can provide information regarding disagreement resolution services and appeals to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (SENDIST).

The latest edition of the SEND Local Offer newsletter - February 2025 - is now available to read online.
