Reading:

The main sites we use in school are:

www.readingeggs.co.uk - your child will have their log in details stuck on the front of their home learning packs.

new.phonicsplay.co.uk - this site is currently offering free access - username: march 20 password: home

Both these sites will support your child's phonetic knowledge and will help with developing their reading fluency. In addition, sharing storybooks your child may have at home is another good way to support your child. You can find ideas for verbal comprehension questions further down this page or in your child's reading diary. It is important to remember to encourage your child to learn to read tricky words too which can also be found in their reading diaries and on the sites above.

Additional resources for reading include:

www.oxfordowl.co.uk & an app is available to download from worldbooks - these websites both offer a free library of e-books as we won't be able to change your child's reading book whilst they are off school.

For further phonics support you could also access: www.oxfordphonicscheck.co.uk which will generate word lists for your child to read.

In your child's packs they also have CGP Phonics books & Comprehension books to complete.

Books to read at home:

Mathematics:

In school, we use www.whiterosehub.co.uk - each week there will be an update of what your child will be covering with resources to support. This weeks focus is mass and weight. Here is the link to find the resources https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/

In addition, I have also set home learning tasks on www.mathletics.co.uk - on this website I can see who is accessing the site and also track progress.

WELCOME TO 1S!

Hello and welcome to 1S' class page.

Your teacher is Miss Shaw.

Mrs Wallace will be working as an intervention teacher.

Miss McGrath is also here to help.

We hope you enjoy taking a look at our brilliant page of learning.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Reading Books:

Your child will receive a phonetically decodable book and a story book to read for pleasure. Please sign reading diaries regularly explains how your child has found their reading practise.

If your child is finding a story easy, please ask them lots of comprehension questions to ensure they understand the book they are reading. Questions can include:

  • Who are the characters?
  • What role does ______ have in the story?
  • Where is the story set?
  • What happens at the beginning?
  • What happens in the middle?
  • What happens at the end of the story?
  • Can you tell me your favourite part of the story?
  • Did you like or dislike the story?
  • Can you find my a word beginning with _____?
  • Can you find a word with the ____ sound?

PHONICS

In class, your child is being taught Phase 5 Phonics. They will take a Phonics Screening Check in June 2020. The check consists of 40 real and pseudo (alien) words and it is to test your child's blending skills. Please practice reading the sound mats below as much as possible. Whilst your child is reading their home school reading book, you can help them to break down the sounds and blend the word together to read.

We follow Letters and Sounds. In Year 1 we focus on Phase 4 and Phase 5. Some children receive additional Phase 2 and Phase 3 intervention. Here is the link to the document we follow:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/letters-and-sounds

There are also fantastic resources to access on this website too:

http://www.letters-and-sounds.com

Homework & Spellings:

Homework  will be sent out on a Friday each week. There will be spellings and tasks set. Book will be marked on a Tuesday. Additional homework sheets will be sent out too.

Spellings will be sent on a Friday. These spellings will be bespoke to your child's needs. In Year 1 children will receive tricky word, high frequency words or spelling patterns.

P.E

This half term, P.E is on a Monday afternoon.

Your child needs to keep their P.E kit in a clearly labelled P.E bag in school every day.

We will send it home at the end of each half term.

They will need:

White t-shirt, black shorts/pants/leggings and a pair of black P.E pumps.

Book Bags & Uniform:

Please make sure your child brings a book bag to school everyday. It will help them to carry their homework and reading books. Children will be told to put any important letters or notices inside their book bags so please make sure you check them regularly.

Please ensure that your child's uniform is clearly labelled to avoid loss of belongings. We encourage children to put jumpers in their trays to keep them safe. When the weather is bad, make sure your child has a waterproof coat with a hood and suitable footwear.
