YEAR 1 TOPICS
LITERACY:
We will be focusing on lots of important features within our writing such as spelling,
handwriting and punctuation. We will be using different books and experiences to influence our writing of stories, descriptions, recounts, letters and much more. Phonics and reading are super important in Year 1. Handwriting will be being taught daily and spellings introduced.
NUMERACY:
This year we will be learning all about numbers to 100, addition and subtraction within 20, money, time (reading a clock to o clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to), weight and length and 2D and 3D shapes. There will be a big emphasis on children being able to use mathematical language and understanding and using their reasoning skills.
PHONICS:
In class, your child is being taught Phase 2, 3, 4 & 5 Phonics. This is to make up for the time they missed due to lockdown. Usually in Year 1, we only teach Phase 5 for most of the year. We would appreciate any extra phonics practice that your child can do at home. At the moment, we are focusing on Phase 2 & Phase 3.
Your child will take a Phonics Screening Check in June 2022. The check consists of 40 real and pseudo (alien) words and it is to test your child's blending skills. Please practice reading the sound mats below as much as possible. Whilst your child is reading their home school reading book, you can help them to break down the sounds and blend the word together to read.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
READING BOOKS:
Please ensure your child has read at home and that the reading record book has been signed. Once you read with your child, re-read the book and ask questions to ensure they understand the book they are reading. Listed below are some comprehension questions you could ask.
PE:
This half term, P.E is on a Wednesday Afternoon. Children can wear their PE kits to school for the day. Please ensure your child has the full PE kit
(WHITE T-SHIRT, BLACK SHORTS, BLACK PUMPS)
Homework:
Homework will be sent out on a Friday each week. There will be spellings and tasks set. Book will be marked on a Tuesday. Additional homework sheets will be sent out too.
Book Bags & Uniform:
Please make sure your child brings a book bag to school everyday. It will help them to carry their homework and reading books. Children will be told to put any important letters or notices inside their book bags so please make sure you check them regularly.
Please ensure that your child's uniform is clearly labelled to avoid loss of belongings.
We encourage children to put jumpers in their trays to keep them safe. When the weather is bad, make sure your child has a waterproof coat with a hood and suitable footwear.
