Reading at St Luke’s

At St Luke’s we use ‘Letters and Sounds’ to teach Phonics every day from Nursery through to Year 2. In Nursery the children work through Phase 1 which focuses on listening to sounds. In Reception, letter sounds are introduced in Phase 2 and children begin to use these sounds to read and spell simple words. Reception also work through Phase 3 and Phase 4 which focuses on sounds made of two letters and consonant blends (st, sc, pl, thr, spl). In Year 1, the children work through Phase 5 which introduces new ways to write the sounds they have previously learnt. They also have a Phonics screening test in Year 1 which requires them to read 40 words independently. In Year 2 the children work through Phase 6 and learn many new spelling rules.

Throughout school we prioritise reading with daily Guided and Shared Reading activities. We also use the website ‘Reading Eggs’ which allows children to read books online in school and at home. Each child has the opportunity to take a book home each week to practise reading with their family. We use a wide variety of texts to support reading at St Luke’s.
