Welcome to 5D!
Your Teacher is Miss Dytch
Your Teaching Assistants are Mrs Rehan and Mrs Allan
Come and have a look at our class page to celebrate the hard work, fantastic creativity and achievements in our class!
You will also find important notices and links to useful websites and videos to further support your child’s learning at home.
Reading books will be changed every day after children have read their book and completed their reading quiz. Please ensure your child reads at least three times a week and sign their reading record book each time they have read. Each read earns two house points, so there is a maximum of 14 house points on offer each week! Also, if children receive a high score on their reading quiz they will go up our reading rocket to win prizes and move onto a higher reading band.
Homework is handed out every half-term. Children have a homework book with a map of various activities. They can choose their own activities and earn different points for each one. A minimum of 30 points is required per half-term.
Spellings and Times Table Test
Times Tables Speed Test will be every Tuesday and Spelling Tests are on a Friday.
Children will be given their new spelling rule on a Monday and have the opportunity to practice them each morning in class through various activities. Children are also expected to practice these spellings and rules at home to further embed this knowledge.
PE will be every Monday afternoon this half-term and children will be taking part in gymnastics. Please ensure children have the correct PE Kit (white top, black shorts and black PE pumps). PE kits should stay in school and will be sent home at the end of each half-term to be washed.

Today Year 5 learnt about mummification!
We followed the stages of mummification by wrapping Miss Bolton as a mummy!
We discussed how we would remove the organs and put them into certain canopic jars, the elaborate process of wrapping in linen and placing the coffin in a sarcophagus. Miss Dytch acted as the priest (dressed as Anubis) who would complete this 70 day task!
In Science we have been learning about Space!
We created our own model of the solar system to scale to compare the sizes of the planets.
In Science, we researched a planet and created a factfile in Science.
In Art, we made papier mache planets and painted them using our knowledge and research.
Museum of Science and Industry!
We had a fantastic trip to learn all about forces!
We visited the Experiment Room, watched an engine demonstration and took part in a forces and flight show.
We also explored the museum and learnt about trains, cars and planes as they advanced through time.
This half-term in Spring 2 our topic is...

We have been reading and creating our own poems about fairground rides. We are also linking this to our science topic of forces such as gravity, air resistance and friction and looking at theme parks around the world in Geography.
Have a look at the fabulous and creative 3D rollercoasters rides we made at home!
World Book Day!

Tom's Midnight Garden
Have a look at some of our fantastic Literacy and Science work.
We are reading the mysterious text 'Tom's Midnight Garden' by Philippa Pearce. We are also linking this knowledge of flowers to other subjects, such as the lifecycles of flowers in Science and sketching flowers in Art.
Well done to Emaan and Ali for their fantastic letters to characters in Tom's Midnight Garden!
We learnt about the different male and female parts of the flowers and their uses as part of the lifecycle. Then we dissected flowers to find and identify all the parts we had discussed.
Our Alfa Performance
This half-term, with our Alfa teachers, we have learnt 'Sing'.
Through use of the African drums and different dynamics, children have put in a lot of effort for this finished piece.
A special well done to the drummers and solo singers!

So far we have researched Henry VIII and his six wives, created biographies of William Shakespeare and written our own newspaper reports about Edward VI the Boy King!
We designed our own Tudor roses out of clay and then we painted them. The red part represents the Lancastrians and the white part represents the Yorkists. These two roses were put together to symbolise the joining of the sides after the War of the Roses!
Newsreport about Henry VIII's wives!
Watch our videos in the link below as we become news readers and use our research to explain each wife and their dramatic death!
Stars of the Week!
A huge congratulations to our Golden Award winners this half-term: Muhammad Taha, Sabat-Ali, Hafsa, Abdul, Ali, Athisham and Emaan.
Our Future Aspirations

Have a look at some of our fantastic Science and Geography work.
So far we have looked at minibeasts around the world, researched deadly minibeasts and written a non-chronological report describing our interesting facts.
Minibeast Hunt! 02/10/17
Today we went to the reception area to investigate invertebrates!
We made predictions and created a tally chart of our findings to use for our scientific data next week. We also used our knowledge of micro-habitats to find many different types of minibeasts.
Our Class Assembly!
International Peace Day
I am so proud of all the children in 5D for their outstanding and heartfelt performance in their school assembly. The children worked hard to create their own posters, poems and ideas and showed respect and understanding of peace around the world.
Our Eid Party 14/09/17
5D enjoyed a fantastic party with delicious food, music and games. Children also wrote their own recounts of their Eid celebrations at home and shared these with their peers.
Our Reading Area
5D drew their favourite book cover to hang proudly over our reading area and are using the reading rocket to show their effort in Accelerated Reading quizzes.
Here are the links to some of the exciting websites that children use in school to support their reading, comprehension skills and numeracy. Children will have their own passwords and I will be able to monitor their understanding to support them further.
